Title: DayBlack ( Vol: 1) Author: Keef Cross Publisher: Rosarium Publishing Publication Date: August 21st 2015 Genre: Sequential Art, Comic, Paranormal Format: e-ARC My Rating: 5/5 Links: Goodreads . Amazon Blurb: Beneath the polluted clouds of DayBlack, Georgia, exists a murderer. After hundreds of years of killing to survive, he no longer wants to simply exist . . . he wants to live. DayBlack is the story of Merce, a former slave who was bitten by a vampire in the cotton fields. Four hundred years later, he works as a tattoo artist in the small town of DayBlack. The town has a sky so dense with pollution that the sun is nowhere to be seen, allowing Merce to move about freely, night or day. Even darker than the clouds are the dreams he’s been having that are causing him to fall asleep at the most awkward times (even while he’s tattooing someone). As he struggles to decipher his dreams, someone from his past returns with plans for him—plans that will threaten his new way of life and turn him back into the cold-hearted killer he once was My Review: DayBlack is officially the best comic that I have read in 2016!! (so far!) From the illustrations, to the plot, to the diversity, this Comic bares it all. The author, Keef Cross is a tattoo artist, and he doesn't shy away from displaying his creative tats with the readers. They are stunning ! I really loved the fact that the main character is a POC. In short, an exquisite , weird, diverse, and intriguing read. I highly recommend reading this book . It contains some mature content, so it is not for everyone. About the Author: I make art, it's truly an escape. An escape from stereotypes and expectations put on "black art" and it's creators. It seems like most people are comfortable seeing black people portrayed walking to church, playing a jazz horn, braiding hair on the porch and things of that nature. There isn't anything wrong with that, but that's not all we are, and that's not all we do. Similar toblack cinema and radio, audiences have gotten used to and even anticipate these redundant one sided offerings of black life. Growing up being influenced by Ralph Bakshi, Vaugn Bode', Wendy Pini, and Robert Crumb to name a few, really shaped my visual aesthetic, and tone of my paintings, but even more so, my approach to creating my comic book, "DayBlack". I found that those underground comics of the 70's always had one foot in sexual raunchiness and drugs, and another foot in social commentary, a combination that fascinated me as a kid. Who knew that in those adult comics I hid from my mother, I would find my individual voice and style. I'm all about pushing progressiveimages and ideas about my people to the forefront whenever I get the chance. TV, radio, and film won't do it, but I feel like art is the last medium that has been corrupted the least, and with the help of other like minded artists who aren't afraid to challenge these notions of what black art is and can be , we can help change the way the world sees us, and the way we see ourselves, one gallery at a time.

My Review: I received a review copy from Curiosity Quills , in exchange with an honest review. Broken Dolls is not only a book with an intruging plot that urges many readers to pick up the book, but also a story that will keep you questioning the main characters' motives with every page flipped. If you enjoyed Coraline, then you are probably going to end up Head over Heels for this book! If I can review this book with only one sentence, then this would be it . "This book is weird in the best way ever !!" After finishing this book, all that I wanted to do is send an email to Tim Burton to tell him about this incredible story !! I can see this adapted into a successful, dark stop motion animation . This book helped me survive my migraine that lasted for more than 12 hours ! When my eyes were closed to escape the dreadful fatigue , I had such a luscious, vivid tale to entertain me. Some people weren't pleased with how the book ended, but I simply believe that it was perfect. I absolutely loved Broken Dolls, and I can't wait to read more books by this awesome author. I give it 5/5 stars. About the Author: I'm a Jack, or more accurately, a Tyrolin of all trades. My Review: I received an e-ARC copy of Shadows and Dreams from the publisher via NetGALLEY , in exchange with an honest review. Shadows and Dreams is an intriguing pilot with lots of vivid, futuristic descriptions that will leave you craving to read the next episode . Sometimes, you need to read more than 30 pages to get into the book. However, this pilot managed to capture my interest half way through ( the 30-something pages) & the ending was just perfect. I felt like there was so much pressure on Mathew to make the readers fall in love with this serial , and I believe that he did an amazing job with this pilot ! About the Author: Originally from the Midwest, Matthew Cody now lives in New York City with his wife and son. When not writing books or goofing off with his family, he teaches creative writing to kids of all ages. Title: Gabriel and the Swallows Author: Esther Dalseno Publisher: Of Tomes Publication Publication Date: March 2016 Genre: New Adult, Fantasy, Romance Format: ebook My Rating: 4.75/ 5 stars Links: GoodReads . Amazon Blurb: Orvieto, 1957 Gabriel, a peasant boy with a disabled mother, constructs elaborate fantasy worlds to comfort when life becomes unbearable. The monotonous days of poverty and merciless bullying are interrupted when Gabriel unintentionally attracts the attention of a mysterious creature, a girl with swallow’s wings. Navigating life with fellow outsider, the foreigner Orlando Khan, Gabriel abandons his small town for the grandeurs of Rome. But Gabriel is now a man and must choose where he belongs: the imperfect reality, or the dream world that grows stronger and more seductive with each day… My Review: Gabriel and the Swallows is a coming of age book that is not only beautifully written, but also creatively scripted . It is not another coming of age story; It is a magical story that includes diversity that is well researched, magical realism that is mind-blowing, and a writing style that will haunt you ! I found myself highlighting a lot of quotes !!!! And by a lot , I mean way too much !! He called everyone “God-damn bastardo salami-eaters, except for you Gabriel . “I am a human with bird tendencies when I am with you.And I am a bird with human tendencies when I am with them.” - Volatile “Your subconscious is a place too, as real as any other.” -Volatile If that doesn't make you want to get and read this book ASAP, I don't know what will. Gabriel's best friend Orlando, was a Muslim. Once I discovered that, I was dancing around like a fool. Esther started by showing some of the Islamic practices , before using the word Muslim or Islam. Just like any other human, Orlando made mistakes & sinned. She showed how Muslims are flawed, but not the religion itself. She also used some Arabic words with english pronunciation that I liked very much. Those who disliked this book complained about how foolish Gabriel was, and how it took him way to long to appreciate what he had. How the main characters were hard to LIKE !!! But I have to say that the fact that characters were flowed, made me love the story & the characters even more. This is a story with real characters, in a fictional world ! I only wished that the revelation part was described a bit more, especially that Esther is a wizard with words , when it comes to description. I absolutely adored GATS; it is a book the left with tears, not only because of the events that shaped the ending, but also because my journey with this book was over. I give it 4.75/ 5 stars . About the Author: Esther Dalseno was born in Australia. After living in both Portland, Oregon and Sydney, New South Wales, she headed off to see the world. Writing and teaching, she has lived in Laos, Vietnam and South Korea and has traveled the world extensively. She now lives in with her family in Berlin. Title: Animal Farm Author: George Orwell Publisher: Secker and Warburg Publication Date: August 17, 1945 Genre: Dystopia, Classics , Literature Format: Paperback My Rating : 4/5 Links: Goodreads . Amazon Blurb: "All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others." Revolution is in the air at Manor Farm after old Major, a prize boar, tells the other animals about his dream of freedom and teaches them to sing "Beasts of England." Mr Jones, the drunken farmer, is deposed and a committee of pigs takes over the running of the farm. The animals are taught to read and write, but the dream turns sour, the purges begin and those in charge come more and more to resemble their oppressors. Orwell's allegory of the Soviet revolution remains as lucid and compelling as ever. In beautifully clear prose, he gives us a vivid gallery of characters and a fable that conveys the truth about how we are manipulated through language and the impossibility of finding heaven on earth. My Review: Animal Farm was one of my favorite reads in 2015. Not only was it enjoyable , but also very satirical . It is funny how history keeps on repeating itself, and we keep on finding ourselves pawns to vial actions covered in an eluding disguise of saints. One thing that really caught my attention was how those who were bad at memorizing were considered stupid. Since this was written in third person, I wasn't sure if Orwell was capturing the common stigma during that time, or simply stating his own opinion. My favorite quotes include: 1) "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." 2) “The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.” This was an enjoyable, thought provoking read ! I give it 4/5 stars. About the Author: Eric Arthur Blair, better known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English author and journalist. His work is marked by keen intelligence and wit, a profound awareness of social injustice, an intense opposition to totalitarianism, a passion for clarity in language, and a belief in democratic socialism. Title: Queen of Someday ( Stolen Empire #1) Author: Sherry D. Ficklin Publisher: Clean Teen Publishing Publication Date: October 7th, 2014 Genre: YA, Historical Fiction Format: e-book My Rating: 3 stars Links: GoodReads . Amazon Blurb: ONE GIRL WILL BRING AN EMPIRE TO ITS KNEES... Imperial Court holds dangers like nothing Sophie has ever faced before. In the heart of St. Petersburg, surviving means navigating the political, romantic, and religious demands of the bitter Empress Elizabeth and her handsome, but sadistic nephew, Peter. Determined to save her impoverished family—and herself—Sophie vows to do whatever is necessary to thrive in her new surroundings. But an attempt on her life and an unexpected attraction threatens to derail her plans. With traitors and murderers lurking around every corner, her very life hangs in the balance. Betrothed to one man but falling in love with another, Sophie will need to decide how much she’s willing to sacrifice in order to become the empress she is destined to be. In a battle for the soul of a nation, will love or destiny reign supreme? My Review: I received a review copy from the Clean Teen Publishing in exchange with an honest review. If you enjoyed " The Selection", you might want to pick this up. The Selection was a dystopian, but this is a historical fiction. This means that you get to see less social status, more ugly truths in this book. My favorite thing about this book was the character building and development. I believe that Sherry did a fantastic job creating characters that you will get to truly love, hate, and pity . I wasn't a huge fan of the love square; this might be one of the reasons that turned me off. It wasn't easy for me to rate this book, there were a lot of things that I loved, yet a lot that I didn't really enjoy. I give it 3/5 stars. Title: Queen of Tomorrow ( Stolen Empire #2) Author: Sherry D. Ficklin Publisher: Clean Teen Publishing Publication Date: July 15th, 2015 Genre: YA, Historical Fiction Format: e-book My Rating: 4 stars Links: GoodReads . Amazon Blurb: Sophie—now Catherine, Grand Duchess of Russia—had a tough first year at Imperial Court. Married at sixteen to Grand Duke Peter, heir to the throne, and settled in their own palace, things are finally looking up. As a new day dawns, she thinks only of securing her future, and the future of their country, during one of the greatest political upheavals of her time. Fighting desperately against forces trying to depose the Empress Elizabeth and put the young Prince Ivan on her throne, Sophie soon finds herself in the middle of a war brewing between her beloved Prussia, and her new empire. But even as she navigates the fragile political landscape, she quickly realizes that she has only begun to discover the tangled web of deceit and infidelity woven over the lavish court of Oranienbaum Palace. When a strange and delicate alliance forms between the young couple, she glimpses a future of happiness, only to see it lost in a moment at the hands of those who still seek to end her life—and prevent her reign. Out of favor with the empress and running out of options, Sophie will have to sacrifice her own innocence on the altar of Russia if she is to save the nation, and herself. To survive, she will have to do the unthinkable, betray those closest to her and become something greater and more dangerous than she ever imagined she could be… a queen. My Review: I received a review copy from Clean Teen Publishing in exchange with an honest review. I didn't know that I will end up loving this book. I wasn't a big fan of the 1st book, but this.... It is incredible! I repeat what I said about character development in the 1st book, but Sherry takes it to a brand new level. The plot thickens in Queen of Tomorrow ! Sophie grows a thicker skin, and faces the consequences of doing so. Peter, well.... I went from hating him , to feeling sorry for him, and the circle keeps on spinning. If you have read the 1 st book , and weren't sure if you want to continue the series, I highly recommend you to do so. I really enjoyed this, and I give it 4/5 stars. About the Author: Sherry D. Ficklin is a full-time writer and the author of over a dozen novels for teens and young adults. She is the best-selling author of the Stolen Empire series, the #Hacker series, and The Lost Imperials series. She can often be found browsing her local bookstore with a large white hot chocolate in one hand and a towering stack of books in the other. That is, unless she’s on deadline at which time she, like the Loch Ness monster, is only seen in blurry photographs. Title: Malice in Ovenland Author: Micheline Hess Publisher: Rosarium Publishing Publication Date: August 31t ,, 2016 Genre: Graphic Novel, Fantasy, Fairy tale spin off Format: e-ARC My Rating: 4/5 stars Links: GoodReads . Amazon Blurb: Lily Brown is a bright, curious, energetic young girl from Queens, New York. When her mom forces her to stay home for the summer and do chores, Lily fumes. Little did she know that the greasy oven in the kitchen was going to give her more excitement and adventure than she could possibly handle. My Review: I received an e-ARC of Malice in Overland from the publisher via NetGalley, in exchange with an honest review. This was a fun, interesting, and gross fast read. As you can see from the title, this is a spin-off of Alice in wonderland. We follow Lily as she falls down her mother's OVEN, and discover that creature have been living there all along. It all looks like Trouble ! Trouble ! Trouble ! This comic captured my attention right from the start; I am pretty sure that kids would enjoy reading this either alone, or with their parents. The comic is based on foreshadowing some of what we have learned in elementary school like evolution and things like that. It also perfectly highlights the fear of trying something new . The author is a person of color, and so is the main character. How often do we see POC on the cover of books & comics??? This is definitely an #OWNVOICE book ! The fact that the author is also the artist blew my mind. It is hard for me to find a comic with nice and clear illustrations, but I loved the ones in this The only thing that I didn't like was something that happened just before the climax was resolved. I wasn't able to notice how Lily discovered the "SECRET ". I give it 4/5 stars. About the Author: Born and raised in NYC, Micheline Hess works as a designer at a prominent ad agency and spends her spare time developing graphic novels, short stories, and interactive iBooks for kids. She has always been interested by the portrayal of black people in visual narrative like comics and movies and is constantly endeavoring to weave her own sense of humorous story-telling into both her personal and sometimes professional work. Micheline is most adept at creating characters and stories that provide a safe and fun way to inspire young children, especially girls. Through colorful flights of fun and fancy, she hopes to encourage a stronger sense of self-love, friendship, and a hunger to embrace all things new and different in the world around them.
Title: The Jump
Author: Doug Johnstone Publisher: Faber&Faber Publication Date: August 9th, 2016 Genre: Thriller, Mystery, Fiction Format: e-ARC My Rating: 4.5/5 stars Links: Amazon . Goodreads Blurb: Struggling to come to terms with the suicide of her teenage son, Ellie lives in the shadows of the Forth Road Bridge, lingering on its footpaths and swimming in the waters below. One day she talks down another suicidal teenager, Sam, and sees for herself a shot at redemption, the chance to atone for her son's death. But even with the best intentions, she can't foresee the situation she's falling headlong into — a troubled family, with some very dark secrets of their own. The Jump is a hugely moving contemporary thriller, and a stunning portrait of an unlikely heroine. MY Review: I received an eARC of The Jump from Faber&Faber in exchange with an honest review. This book was released last year in th e UK, but this blog tour is for the US rerelease of the book. This is my very first Doug Johnstone book, and honestly I am very impressed with The Jump. This is a book that will give you something to think about with every chapter you finish ! I was hooked right after finishing the first chapter. The writing style is one of those things that matter to me the most, and I enjoyed the one in this book. It wasn't what I usually loved, which is "Pretty & Metaphoric", but rather " Smooth & Fast Flowing" . This suits the storyline perfectly. There is nothing better than an intriguing plot, and fast flowing writing style. Smooth & Fast flowing writing, doesn't mean that the description was plain and boring. This is a story that needed so much emotional description, and it doesn't lack that. I really enjoyed reading The Jump. I give it 4.5/5 stars.
Doug's writing process
Every book comes to life in the same way (at least they have so far, and I’m halfway through a first draft of my ninth novel and I don’t see any sign of the pattern ending). Before I begin a first draft, I spend a couple of months planning, plotting and making notes. I say “making notes,” but the process is a lot more haphazard than that suggests. To begin with, it’s really just scribbling stream of consciousness guff — ideas about themes, characters, settings and so on. Usually all of this is swirling around a central “inciting incident” — a hit and run, a missing person, a suicide. Gradually over the weeks, things begin to coalesce into something more tangible, and at the same time, stuff starts to appear on the walls above my desk. For a start there are pictures. Photographs of locations along with images of people who fit the physical characteristics of my characters. There is always an Ordnance Survey map of the area where the action takes place. So for my latest book, The Jump, I had a huge map of the river Forth, stretching from Fife over to Edinburgh, with all the little islands scattered about, and of course the bridges that span the water, the structures that are such an integral part of the story. Also, at some point, a writing schedule makes its way onto the wall. How many words need to be written by which dates. I rarely stick to it, but it’s motivation enough to keep going. I also have a list of major plot points, and on my desk I have a more detailed scene-by-scene list. Some of these scenes are very fleshed out — typically the beginning and final scenes — but some of them have very little detail, leaving room for whatever pops into my brain at the time of writing. And still more stuff winds up on the wall. There’s usually a ‘Don’t Forget’ list — a compilation of themes, subplots, character relationships and so on that I want to keep in the loop. Writing a novel feels a lot like keeping all these plates spinning in the air, and this list is my reminder to give each particular plate a little spin every now and then. And then finally, just before I launch into the first draft, a single sheet of A4 goes up with motivational crap on it. This has grown over the years, each new book seemingly inspiring a new piece of advice for myself. And seeing as how I’m revealing all my writing method secrets here, I’ll end here with what was on my wall when I wrote The Jump. Whether it will mean anything to anyone else is open to debate, but I leave you with it anyway. Enjoy! BE FEARLESS LESS IS MORE SHOW, DON’T TELL NEVER APOLOGIZE, NEVER EXPLAIN INCREASE THE CONFLICT AS EXTREME AS POSSIBLE EVERY WORD MUST JUSTIFY ITS EXISTENCE

Title: Furthermore Author: Tahereh Mafi Publisher: Penguin Teen Publication Date: August 30th, 2016 Genre: Middle Grade, Fantasy, Magic Links: Goodreads . Amazon Blurb: There are only three things that matter to twelve-year-old Alice Alexis Queensmeadow: Mother, who wouldn't miss her; magic and color, which seem to elude her; and Father, who always loved her. The day Father disappears from Ferenwood he takes nothing but a ruler with him. But it's been almost three years since then, and Alice is determined to find him. She loves her father even more than she loves adventure, and she's about to embark on one to find the other. But bringing Father home is no small matter. In order to find him she'll have to travel through the mythical, dangerous land of Furthermore, where down can be up, paper is alive, and left can be both right and very, very wrong. Her only companion is a boy named Oliver whose own magical ability is based in lies and deceit--and with a liar by her side in a land where nothing is as it seems, it will take all of Alice's wits (and every limb she's got) to find Father and return home to Ferenwood in one piece. On her quest to find Father, Alice must first find herself--and hold fast to the magic of love in the face of loss. Thoughts: OKAY, I ONLY READ THE SNEAK PEAK SO FAR. Usually,I don't review books just because of their sneak peaks, but I can't hold myself from writing one RIGHT NOW ! This will be a RIP, which after a second thought, isn't that appealing. Anyways, this is my review-in-progress. Wether I somehow end up with the full ARC, or purchase it whenever it is available in bookstore over here, I will update my Rating and Review. I didn't realize how much I missed Tahereh's writing style, until I read the 1st page of Furthermore. Pretty descriptions , rhyming phrases, and metaphors, how much have I missed thee! I fell in love with how Alice thinks. I am not 12; I am almost a decade older, and I was still impressed by the way she acts and observes what is around her. I was just like her, a few years ago. Also, the narration is NOT LIKE WHAT IS IN MOST BOOKS, because IT IS TAHEREH MAFI.....DUH ! Loved the narration! It kind of reminded me of that in the movie ( Lemony Snicket's : A Series of Unfortunate Events) The plot itself is very novel and creative, and I can't wait to dive into the adventurous journey of reading the book.
