Aster Layne believes in physics, not psychics. A tarot card reading on the Ocean City Boardwalk should have been a ridiculous, just-for-fun thing. It wasn’t. Aster discovers she has a very unscientific gift-with a simple touch of the cards, she can change a person’s fate.
Reese Van Buren is cursed. Like the kind of old-school, centuries-old curse that runs in royal families. Every firstborn son is doomed to die on his eighteenth birthday-and Reese’s is coming up fast. Bummer. He tries to distract himself from his inevitable death…only to find the one person who can save him. Aster doesn’t know that the hot Dutch guy she’s just met needs her help-or that he’s about to die. But worst of all…she doesn’t know that her new gift comes with dark, dark consequences that can harm everyone she loves.
The Interview:
You have probably seen Brenda's name in many places before. From hosting contests like Pitch Wars, writing helpful advice to help aspiring writer, to publishing her novels, Brenda Drake is definitely a name that won't be forgotten anytime soon........or ever ! :D The Cursed Empire : From the way you run your social media, to the contests you host, I here by announce you as Queen Bee! Can you tell us about how your journey in the literary started? Brenda : Ha! I’m so happy I fooled you. Some days it can all feel overwhelming. But I love it all. My writing journey started after I had remarried. I think I was being a little clingy when my new husband asked if I had any hobbies. I told him I loved writing and he said I should do that. So I did. I had many missteps and errors along the way, but I couldn’t stop writing. Even if no one wanted to read my stories, I would still write them. I was born a storyteller. Stories continually play within my mind and in my dreams. The Cursed Empire: What inspired you to host contests like Pitch Wars? Was it the the querying process, or something else? Brenda: I started participating in blog hops to get to know other writers. Then I had the idea to have a blog hop with the writers sharing their work and an agent picking her favorites and offering requests. I had been in other contests on blogs. After that, I enjoyed it so I decided to do a contest on my blog with several agents. I liked how writers were showcased and how other writers could see what worked in the pitches and first pages showcased. The contests really took off, and I was surprised how popular they’ve become. They’re always a work in progress, though. Nothing is ever perfect, but I keep trying. The Cursed Empire: The premise of Touching Fate is very intriguing. What inspired you to write the novel? Brenda: I’ve always liked the supernatural. Tarot cards and Ouija boards fascinated me. I was in New Orleans for a conference and had a tarot card reading. The idea of changing people’s fates with the cards kept haunting my thoughts. Then a few months later, while attending my publisher’s conference in Las Vegas, the idea hit me again during a brainstorming session. A few author friends helped me iron out the details for the story in an elevator, and the story was born. It was so much fun to write. The Cursed Empire: You have another book coming out in January 2016 .Thief of Lies, the first book in the Library Jumpers series, which is also a Fantasy Series. What are some of you favorite fantasy books that you have read as a child? Brenda: My favorite book growing up was The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I think it was the only book I could find to read in my Grandmother’s house when we were there for a long visit. The bonds in the story moved me. I enjoyed The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis and The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien and other books by them. That’s were my love for fantasy came from. I read many Nancy Drew and Anne of Green Gables novels. The Giver, Dune, and Ender’s Game fascinated me. I enjoy reading in all genres. The Cursed Empire: What are your top 3 Fantasy T.V shows?Supernatural, Vampire Diaries, and Teen Wolf. Brenda: Supernatural, Vampire Diaries, and Teen Wolf. The Cursed Empire: To outline a novel, or to not outline ??? Brenda: To sort of outline a novel. I do a graph of the plot and then let the characters take me from there. I’m willing to change course if the characters insist. The Cursed Empire: Your current favorite book/books , and why ? Brenda: I just started reading the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas, and I’m so hooked it’s all I think about it. I have to stop myself reading so I can get other things done. I decided to try it after hearing everyone talk so highly of it. I love the settings, the actions, and the characters. Sarah J. Maas definitely whisks you away in the world she’s created. The Cursed Empire: Do you have any advice for aspiring writers? Brenda: To read tons. Being an author, you have to learn the craft and there’s no better way than to read other writers’ works that you love. Also, patience. This business can be slow and waiting your turn can be frustrating. The best thing to do is keep busy and write the next book while you wait. The Cursed Empire: I saw on your blog that you love to collect mugs and old books. Can we get a picture of your favorites?

Brenda Drake grew up the youngest of three children, an Air Force brat, and the continual new kid at school. Her fondest memories growing up is of her eccentric, Irish grandmother's animated tales, which gave her a strong love for storytelling. So it was only fitting that she would choose to write stories with a bend toward the fantastical. Title: Playing the Player
Author: Lisa Brown Roberts Publisher: Entangled Teen ( Crush ) Publication Date: August 14th, 2015 Genre : YA Format: e ARC My Rating: 4.5 / 5 stars Blurb: The Good Girl Vs. The Player Round one begins... Trina Clemons needed the money. Why else would she - the most organized, prepared student in school - spend the summer as a nanny and partner with the biggest slacker ever? Now she's ready to tackle nannyhood with her big binder of research and schedules. Just don't ask her about the secret job of "fixing" the bad habits of a certain high school player... Slade Edmunds prefers easy hook-ups, and Trina is definitely not his type. She's all structure and rules, while Slade wants to just have fun. Fortunately, Trina has no idea about the bet Slade made with his best friend that he can totally get her to unwind by the end of summer... Then the weirdest thing happens. There's chemistry. A lot of it. But nothing gets between a boy and a girl like a big, fat secret My Review: I received an e ARC of Playing the Player from Entangled Teen Crush via NetGalley in exchange with my honest review . When I first read the plot, I thought that the plot wasn't the most original thing. I expected it to be one of those stories where it is about how the ending is reached, and not how the story ends. Lisa didn't disappoint at all ! There wasn't a single moment were a felt that a scene was familiar from some other book or movie. With all of mind blowing characters she created, I was busy laughing and swooning the entire time. I really loved how each character had his/ her own...flavor ? I seriously can't imagine this book without any of them. It is like the author mind mapped every single detail, from their characteristics to their appearances, to make them this epic. For instance, I loved how Slade had long hair, and tied it with a shoelace....WHAT ?? I fell for all of the characters, the jerk, Trina, Alex, and most importantly, the kids ! My favorite lines had to be : " The library is a public place ?" :O "It Naked time ! " And this is just a hint on how crazy these kids are. The romance was perfect ! I only wish there was a bit more. There was a part in the book, right after the first kiss, where the events were shown fast forward after 2 weeks. I wish we saw what how the relationship grew, or that specific * spoiler alert* swimming session ! If there are any deleted scenes, I hope that we get to read them soon . ;) I also didn't like how the 1st secret came out; I wish it happened in a different way. The fact that I read this in one day basically says it all; this must be my favorite entangled teen crush book so far ! I absolutely fell in love with Lisa's writing style; she knows how to hook a reader, and I can't wait to read more books by her. I give Playing the Player 4.5 stars out 5.

Title: Placid Girl Author: Brenna Ehrlich Publisher: All Age Press Publication Date: August 25th , 2015 Genre: YA Format: e ARC My Rating: 4.5/ 5 Pre Order link : Amazon Blurb: Punk was created for the malcontents, something that loner and aspiring drummer Hallie understands all too well. Trapped in a boring suburban life – dysfunctional parents included! – Hallie drowns her angst in the angry songs of Haze, a masked musician who has not been heard from in five years. So naturally she’s surprised – and more than a little skeptical – when someone who seems to be Haze starts flirting with her via her favorite photo-sharing app. Is he who he says he is? What does he want from her? The questions only multiply when Hallie — along with bandmate Sarah and aspiring music journalist Steve — roadtrip to Haze's comeback gig to unmask the reclusive musician once and for all. My Review: I received an e ARC copy of Placid Girl from All Age Press via Net Galley, in exchange with an honest review. One of the most thrilling books that I have ever read ! The author will keep you on your toes with every page you turn. You know how sometimes a chapter begins with a classical quote; well this one begins with a lyrics from one of Haze's songs. I wish Haze was a real artist. You know what, scratch that ! I just wish that both albums existed in real life. Brenna will make you experience the music written as if you were at a live concert. Every beat will move you, and the lyrics will change you. I really liked the concept of the story. We follow Hallie, Sarah, and Steve as they try to " unmask " Haze. The journey itself is rough. It is filled with a mixture of receiving secret messages, parent abuse, parent neglection , uncovering past events, falling in love , running away from the police......see? It is pretty awesome. There was a time when these secret messages were very creepy, and I was surprised to how Hallie reacted to them! However, after finishing the novel, I read something about how this book was somehow related to Lolita, which made me accept Hallie's actions. I wished the author explained what was happening at Sarah's house, instead of referring to it was bad over there. I was curious to know the events. I loved Stevie ! Although he could be rude at times, I totally shipped those short Stellie moments. I also never saw that Sarah-Hallie thing coming. I loved the ending ! It was just perfect. It was one of the 4 predictions that I had in mind, so I was not disappointed . To anyone who read the book, let us discuss the last sentence !!!!!! In other words, Placid girl was an original, refreshing read. I give it 4.5 stars out of 5. Title: Anya and the Shy Guy ( A Backstage Pass Novel #4 ) Author: Suze Winegardner Publisher: Entangled Teen Crush Publication Date: July 14th, 2015 Genre: YA , Contemporary Format: e ARC My Rating: 4.25 / 5 stars Blurb: It’s always the quiet ones… Anya Anderson doesn’t just need a big break, she needs any break. Living on the streets doesn’t leave a girl many options, so when she scores a gig reporting on the Seconds to Juliet tour, she jumps at the chance to earn enough money to sleep somewhere safe. And the paycheck will get bigger—and keep her off the streets for good—if she can dig up dirt on Will Fray, the irritatingly hot “shy guy” of the band. Problem is, Will Fray isn't who everyone thinks he is. In fact, he’s not Will at all. Matt, Will's identical twin, is actually the guy onstage, reluctantly covering for his brother while he’s in rehab. To make matters worse, Matt’s being shadowed by a cute reporter with troubled eyes determined to get the scoop. On him. And he's having trouble finding the willpower to keep his distance… But if the secret gets out, it won't just be his head on a platter—it’ll be the whole band’s. This Entangled Teen Crush book contains steamy make out scenes, graphic language, and a love story so hot your copy may spontaneously burst into flames. You’ve been warned. My Review: I received an e ARC of Anya and the Shy Guy from Entangled Crush via Net Galley in exchange with my honest review. Although I did not read any of the previous books, I was still able to keep up and enjoy the book easily. The Backstage pass is a series that follows a famous boy band as each one of them fall in love. In this fourth installation, we get to see the shy guy ,Will, fall in love, but Will isn't Will. This novel is told from 2 POV's , but in third person ! We follow Anya's story as she tries to get her story on Will to escape living on the streets, and the lies she told and hid . We also see Matt's story as he tries to charm Anya to keep her from discovering his twin's secrets, but of course they Fall In Love ! But will this love survive ? Can their secrets stay hidden? What would happen if both of their secrets are spilled? Tada da dan ! Read to know how this story ends I like that we got see both POV, and I like it more that it is written in 3rd person. I also liked how the characters developed, in a "what matters to me more "sort of way. My only problem was something that happened in the ending. Spoiler Alert Spoiler Alert !! I am not convinced that their manager agreed to back off so easily. He seemed like a person who would risk anything to get what he wants, isn't that why Will is not Will, but backed off too easily at the end. I wished that there was more into what happened when the band stood up for what they want. Spoiler Ended Spoiler Ended !! The novel was a bit graphic, so I don't recommend it to very young readers. You know what, get it and read it when you are older! I think that Suze did a good job with her debut novel.I am defiantly looking forward to read more of her books. Anya and the Shy Guy is the perfect summer read! With all of the fluffiness, swoon, and interesting events, I was not able to put it down. I give Anya and the Shy Guy 4.25 /5 stars . Yesterday, I saw this. There were many emotions to feel. From being Angry to being disappointed, only one feeling stood out for me. Shocked, that is what I felt. Although I can see over twitter and Facebook how understanding and loving the Frans are, I am going to be using the pronoun I rather than we . If you still feel like you wanted to be involved in this, read I out loud. Read it as if you are the one who wrote this. Anomaly is a book that I will always remember because I read it right after my fifth semester's midterms. Basically, Anomaly was my get away vacation after such a stressful week, and the upcoming long week of lectures, tutorials, and labs. I was shocked because, the story is amazing! I loved Josie and Reid ; I loved the plot, and the overall critical reception the book had was( IS ) positive ! The pictures below will explain what I mean in more details. I wish I could mention all of the book bloggers too, but that would take forever.
After being shocked for a while, I realized something. The road to publication is very complicated. There are a lot of things that can go wrong from writing a sequel, to having it on shelves . Whatever complications happened, it is still okay. It is okay to be sad as a reader. It is okay to be upset as a writer. It is okay to be feeling down as a person who works in the Publishing House. Problems pop out and block a certain road because there is a more interesting route to follow. I am happy that I got to read Anomaly, even if it is now a stand alone . I am even happier because this isn't Goodbye ; it is only a see you later. I don't why there isn't going to be a second book, but I know that Tonya will be publishing more Kick Ass novels in the future. Here is a link to Tonya's Blog Post : Letter to my FRANS Here is a link to my review of Anomaly: My Review I

Title: Naked Publisher: Entangled Teen Publication Date: July 7th, 2015 Genre: YA, Contemporary , Fiction Format: e ARC My Rating: 5/5 stars Purchase Links: Goodreads Amazon Barnes & Noble Blurb: The best place to hide is in a lie… I could never fit in to the life my parents demanded. By the time I was thirteen, it was too much. I ran away to New York City…and found a nightmare that lasted three years. A nightmare that began and ended with a pimp named Luis. Now I am Dirty Anna. Broken, like everything inside me has gone bad. Except that for the first time, I have a chance to start over. Not just with my parents but at school. Still, the rumors follow me everywhere. Down the hall. In classes. And the only hope I can see is in the wide, brightly lit smile of Jackson, the boy next door. So I lie to him. I lie to protect him from my past. I lie so that I don’t have to be The Girl Who Went Bad. The only problem is that someone in my school knows about New York. Someone knows who I really am. And it’s just a matter of time before the real Anna is exposed… My Review: I received an e ARC of Naked from Entangled Teen via Net Galley , in exchange with an honest review. So far,Naked is the best book that I have read this year ! Not only does the author discuss a topic that many writers stay away from, but also she does it perfectly ! We follow the story of Anna, an underage prostitute, and the things she dealt and will deal with. The writing style reminded me of that in Poison Study by Marian V. Snyder. You get to follow the story after she goes back to her parents and school, and you will be filled in on what happened during the past few years in the form of teasers. The character development was brilliant, and it will make sense by the end of the book. When you finish it, you will realize how Anna went from being abusively raised by her father, and defiant mother, to being naive, to living in denial, and finally to waking up and realizing that those who claimed to love her were fake. The character development was not just for the protagonist , but also her mother. Living such a traumatizing life, the author was able to write each stage of this journey in an effective way, and with perfect timing. I cried; I smiled ; in other words, Anna's story will haunt you and will make you see this sensitive topic with a new , understanding point of view. P.S: Anna's Art Project was brilliant ;) This is indeed the perfect debut novel for Stacey Trombley , and I can't wait to read more books by this talented author. I give Naked 5/5 stars.
