Title: Undertow (Undertow #1) Author: K.r. Conway Publisher: Patchwork Press Publication Date: October 1, 2013 Genre: Paranormal,Supernatural,YA Format: e ARC MY Rating: 5/5 stars (A) BLURB: Eila Walker knows luck is not a friend, so she is downright shocked to inherit a million-dollar Cape Cod home. And yeah, her new town isn't perfect: the cheerleaders are heinous clones, the local undertow can kill ya, and her Great Grams was supposedly fried by lightning in the harbor square. Still, Eila is hopeful her luckless days are in the past . . . until history decides to repeat itself. My Review: I received Undertow from Patchwork Press via netgalley in exchange with an honest review. Just when I thought that there could not be anymore original and interesting Supernatural YA Novels, K.R. Conway seemed to prove me wrong with UnderTow, a great start of a mind blowing series. First thing First, I googled the meaning of UNDERTOW which is : A Strong Current After finishing the book, I think that the title pretty much describes the series very well because , what does the strong current do? chaos, disasters, loss, then eventually becoming stronger and perhaps recovery. The Prologue is very captivating, you only need to read a few pages to get hooked. Although after the prologue the intensity slowed down a bit, I was not able to stop reading due to the anticipation of wanting to know what happens next and falling in love with all of the characters I could almost relate to all of the main characters. There were a lot of, OMG this is exactly how I feel moments ! "Better to be a locked Vault than an open book I guess" _ Ana The Book is packed with adventure, danger, along with the elements of sacrifice, love, friendship, and betrayal. Yet, I ended it needing more, hence the main issue has not been resolved yet. This is definitely going to be added to my favorite series list , and I can't wait to read the next one. I give this book 5/5 stars and an A according to my own rating scale !

Author: Holly Black Title: The Coldest Girl in ColdTown Publisher: Little, Brown Books Publication Date : September 3rd 2013 Genre: Paranormal, YA, Vampires,Fantasy My Rating: 5/5 stars (A) Blurb: Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown’s gates, you can never leave. One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself. The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is a wholly original story of rage and revenge, of guilt and horror, and of love and loathing from bestselling and acclaimed author Holly Black. My Review: This is not " another vampire book ", the tale is captivating , dark, and embraces the Vampire Cult perfectly. The Coldest Girl in ColdTown reminded me of my favorite vampire book, A Darker Dream by Amanda Ashley, which i have reread it about 4 times because I could not find something as awesome as it. I guess it is Holly Black's The Coldest Girl in ColdTown turn for a future of multiple rereads ! I love how each chapter is marked with a dark quote from many writers, a few of which are my all time favorite. This book being my first read to any of Holly's books, she gained my respect just with the mention of Edgar Allan Poe, Emily and Charlotte Bronte , Emily Dickinson ,and Charles Dickens . Although the those quotes where written in cursive, which i struggle to read, I still loved the concept of it. The chapters are sometimes told from different point of views, but it does not have a specific pattern. The story is mainly told from Tana's point of view, but sometimes other characters get to show us flashbacks or something else in the story. There are a few of Holly's quotes that I don't agree with, so that is just an opinion ,but I loved most of the quotes. I was really engaged with what you call a story within a story, it is full of symbolism and the beauty of creativity, all of which were drowning in the element of darkness. I wanted more, i was really sad when I saw that the book was about to end. I wish there was an extra chapter or that maybe in the future we would get a Novella with more flashbacks and perhaps a few more chapters :) Although I had a kind of a slow start, I end up loving the story as well as the style of writing. Holly Black is officially one of my favorite authors, and I can't wait to read more of her books. I also liked how she stated the vampire books she read that she read and kind of inspired her to write this book, so now I have a couple of book recommendations to add to my TBR. If you like Neil Gaiman, Tim Burton, Edgar Allan Poe, then I highly recommend that you read The Coldest Girl in ColdTown. I give this book 5/5 stars and according to my own rating scale an A. But things are changing in the town of Jericho. Rampant disappearances have forced Mara to seek out others with special powers. In a story that confronts the violence and turmoil of adolescence, Mara and a group of other "unusuals" like her grapple with new alliances and the villains pressing in all around them. “A tale of teenage rebellion in the tradition of classics ranging from The Outsiders to The Hunger Games, Veronica Bane’s fantasy novella explores the timeless themes of growing up, finding one’s inner strength, and discovering where one belongs. The titular antiheroine and her flawed-but-lovable band of “unusuals” are characters that will resonate with teen audiences and older readers alike.” –Ashley Heaton, Editor Review: Mara is a novella which revolves around a group of teenagers who seem to have special powers, but focuses more on Mara rather than the entire Group ! At first, we clearly see that Mara has a troubled past, but exactly how? This is what you find out as read the book. The story keeps on giving you these small clues about her past, then leave you starving for the next couple of chapters, making me want to read the book in just one sitting ! I got a hint of what Mara could do simply by observing the beautiful book cover. Where everyone seems to have a shadow due to the flames around them and of course, her Burning hand ! Mara and the * Unusuals* with the help of few #normal friends , discover the secret agenda the Government has on them and decide to take an action. The Novella was a fast yet refreshing read, which although short, yet all characters were well developed and you get to see a different angle of the situation through each character (good or bad), which is an amazing thing since it is less than 200 pages. I think Veronica Bane did a pretty decent job with her debut Novella and literally can't wait for Book 2: Miyuki ( comes out this year :D!) , who is another awesome Unusual ! I Give Mara 5/ 5 stars! |
