Deleted Scene:

When I walk into the living area. Tanner's standing by the front door. "Tanner? What are you doing?"

He looks up, his expression pained. "I knew there was no way they trusted us this much," he says slowly. "So I checked the door and windows. Locked. And my biometrics wouldn't open them, either."

My mouth dries. "That doesn't mean anything. The security's probably only keyed to members of the Underground. They don't have your biometrics, so how could they possibly be in the system?"

I stride to the door. Tanner moves aside without a word. Wrapping my hand around the door handle, I try to open it. Sure enough: locked.

My pulse speeds up. It's okay. Lots of people lock their doors at night. We may live within the compound walls, but theft still exists.

Yes, but how many people lock their doors on the inside?

Ignoring the voice, I press my fingertips on the glass plate. The machine beeps. ACCESS DENIED.

I position my eyes in front of the retina scan. ACCESS DENIED.

I stick my finger into the opening for a blood prick. ACCESS DENIED.

Denied, denied, denied.

I slump against the wall and turn to Tanner. And that's when I really know. There's no triumph in his eyes. For once, he gets no satisfaction from being right.
"I thought they trusted me," I whisper.

"You were going to break Olivia out. They were right not to trust you."

I shake my head. I feel like someone's just burst my balloon of a heart. Tanner's not surprised we're locked in, and I get that. If we were going on logic alone, he'd be right. They shouldn't trust us.

But he doesn't understand that Zed and Brayden and I are part of the Underground. No, more than that. We were part of that tight-knit community that lived together in the wilderness.

We've been relying and trusting each other most of my life.

The fact that we're here -- where neither of us trusts the other -- is sad. I feel like I'm standing on the edge of a precipice, and one step in the wrong direction will send me rolling down a path I can't stop. Is this just the beginning? Is this the first step on a path that will eventually lead me to becoming Dresden's assistant?

I swore that would never happen. But I never thought that Zed would find it necessary to lock me in, either.
We are in such big trouble.
