My Review: I received an e-ARC copy of Shadows and Dreams from the publisher via NetGALLEY , in exchange with an honest review. Shadows and Dreams is an intriguing pilot with lots of vivid, futuristic descriptions that will leave you craving to read the next episode . Sometimes, you need to read more than 30 pages to get into the book. However, this pilot managed to capture my interest half way through ( the 30-something pages) & the ending was just perfect. I felt like there was so much pressure on Mathew to make the readers fall in love with this serial , and I believe that he did an amazing job with this pilot ! About the Author: Originally from the Midwest, Matthew Cody now lives in New York City with his wife and son. When not writing books or goofing off with his family, he teaches creative writing to kids of all ages.

Title: Gabriel and the Swallows Author: Esther Dalseno Publisher: Of Tomes Publication Publication Date: March 2016 Genre: New Adult, Fantasy, Romance Format: ebook My Rating: 4.75/ 5 stars Links: GoodReads . Amazon Blurb: Orvieto, 1957 Gabriel, a peasant boy with a disabled mother, constructs elaborate fantasy worlds to comfort when life becomes unbearable. The monotonous days of poverty and merciless bullying are interrupted when Gabriel unintentionally attracts the attention of a mysterious creature, a girl with swallow’s wings. Navigating life with fellow outsider, the foreigner Orlando Khan, Gabriel abandons his small town for the grandeurs of Rome. But Gabriel is now a man and must choose where he belongs: the imperfect reality, or the dream world that grows stronger and more seductive with each day… My Review: Gabriel and the Swallows is a coming of age book that is not only beautifully written, but also creatively scripted . It is not another coming of age story; It is a magical story that includes diversity that is well researched, magical realism that is mind-blowing, and a writing style that will haunt you ! I found myself highlighting a lot of quotes !!!! And by a lot , I mean way too much !! He called everyone “God-damn bastardo salami-eaters, except for you Gabriel . “I am a human with bird tendencies when I am with you.And I am a bird with human tendencies when I am with them.” - Volatile “Your subconscious is a place too, as real as any other.” -Volatile If that doesn't make you want to get and read this book ASAP, I don't know what will. Gabriel's best friend Orlando, was a Muslim. Once I discovered that, I was dancing around like a fool. Esther started by showing some of the Islamic practices , before using the word Muslim or Islam. Just like any other human, Orlando made mistakes & sinned. She showed how Muslims are flawed, but not the religion itself. She also used some Arabic words with english pronunciation that I liked very much. Those who disliked this book complained about how foolish Gabriel was, and how it took him way to long to appreciate what he had. How the main characters were hard to LIKE !!! But I have to say that the fact that characters were flowed, made me love the story & the characters even more. This is a story with real characters, in a fictional world ! I only wished that the revelation part was described a bit more, especially that Esther is a wizard with words , when it comes to description. I absolutely adored GATS; it is a book the left with tears, not only because of the events that shaped the ending, but also because my journey with this book was over. I give it 4.75/ 5 stars . About the Author: Esther Dalseno was born in Australia. After living in both Portland, Oregon and Sydney, New South Wales, she headed off to see the world. Writing and teaching, she has lived in Laos, Vietnam and South Korea and has traveled the world extensively. She now lives in with her family in Berlin. Title: Malice in Ovenland Author: Micheline Hess Publisher: Rosarium Publishing Publication Date: August 31t ,, 2016 Genre: Graphic Novel, Fantasy, Fairy tale spin off Format: e-ARC My Rating: 4/5 stars Links: GoodReads . Amazon Blurb: Lily Brown is a bright, curious, energetic young girl from Queens, New York. When her mom forces her to stay home for the summer and do chores, Lily fumes. Little did she know that the greasy oven in the kitchen was going to give her more excitement and adventure than she could possibly handle. My Review: I received an e-ARC of Malice in Overland from the publisher via NetGalley, in exchange with an honest review. This was a fun, interesting, and gross fast read. As you can see from the title, this is a spin-off of Alice in wonderland. We follow Lily as she falls down her mother's OVEN, and discover that creature have been living there all along. It all looks like Trouble ! Trouble ! Trouble ! This comic captured my attention right from the start; I am pretty sure that kids would enjoy reading this either alone, or with their parents. The comic is based on foreshadowing some of what we have learned in elementary school like evolution and things like that. It also perfectly highlights the fear of trying something new . The author is a person of color, and so is the main character. How often do we see POC on the cover of books & comics??? This is definitely an #OWNVOICE book ! The fact that the author is also the artist blew my mind. It is hard for me to find a comic with nice and clear illustrations, but I loved the ones in this The only thing that I didn't like was something that happened just before the climax was resolved. I wasn't able to notice how Lily discovered the "SECRET ". I give it 4/5 stars. About the Author: Born and raised in NYC, Micheline Hess works as a designer at a prominent ad agency and spends her spare time developing graphic novels, short stories, and interactive iBooks for kids. She has always been interested by the portrayal of black people in visual narrative like comics and movies and is constantly endeavoring to weave her own sense of humorous story-telling into both her personal and sometimes professional work. Micheline is most adept at creating characters and stories that provide a safe and fun way to inspire young children, especially girls. Through colorful flights of fun and fancy, she hopes to encourage a stronger sense of self-love, friendship, and a hunger to embrace all things new and different in the world around them.
Title: The Jump
Author: Doug Johnstone Publisher: Faber&Faber Publication Date: August 9th, 2016 Genre: Thriller, Mystery, Fiction Format: e-ARC My Rating: 4.5/5 stars Links: Amazon . Goodreads Blurb: Struggling to come to terms with the suicide of her teenage son, Ellie lives in the shadows of the Forth Road Bridge, lingering on its footpaths and swimming in the waters below. One day she talks down another suicidal teenager, Sam, and sees for herself a shot at redemption, the chance to atone for her son's death. But even with the best intentions, she can't foresee the situation she's falling headlong into — a troubled family, with some very dark secrets of their own. The Jump is a hugely moving contemporary thriller, and a stunning portrait of an unlikely heroine. MY Review: I received an eARC of The Jump from Faber&Faber in exchange with an honest review. This book was released last year in th e UK, but this blog tour is for the US rerelease of the book. This is my very first Doug Johnstone book, and honestly I am very impressed with The Jump. This is a book that will give you something to think about with every chapter you finish ! I was hooked right after finishing the first chapter. The writing style is one of those things that matter to me the most, and I enjoyed the one in this book. It wasn't what I usually loved, which is "Pretty & Metaphoric", but rather " Smooth & Fast Flowing" . This suits the storyline perfectly. There is nothing better than an intriguing plot, and fast flowing writing style. Smooth & Fast flowing writing, doesn't mean that the description was plain and boring. This is a story that needed so much emotional description, and it doesn't lack that. I really enjoyed reading The Jump. I give it 4.5/5 stars.
Doug's writing process
Every book comes to life in the same way (at least they have so far, and I’m halfway through a first draft of my ninth novel and I don’t see any sign of the pattern ending). Before I begin a first draft, I spend a couple of months planning, plotting and making notes. I say “making notes,” but the process is a lot more haphazard than that suggests. To begin with, it’s really just scribbling stream of consciousness guff — ideas about themes, characters, settings and so on. Usually all of this is swirling around a central “inciting incident” — a hit and run, a missing person, a suicide. Gradually over the weeks, things begin to coalesce into something more tangible, and at the same time, stuff starts to appear on the walls above my desk. For a start there are pictures. Photographs of locations along with images of people who fit the physical characteristics of my characters. There is always an Ordnance Survey map of the area where the action takes place. So for my latest book, The Jump, I had a huge map of the river Forth, stretching from Fife over to Edinburgh, with all the little islands scattered about, and of course the bridges that span the water, the structures that are such an integral part of the story. Also, at some point, a writing schedule makes its way onto the wall. How many words need to be written by which dates. I rarely stick to it, but it’s motivation enough to keep going. I also have a list of major plot points, and on my desk I have a more detailed scene-by-scene list. Some of these scenes are very fleshed out — typically the beginning and final scenes — but some of them have very little detail, leaving room for whatever pops into my brain at the time of writing. And still more stuff winds up on the wall. There’s usually a ‘Don’t Forget’ list — a compilation of themes, subplots, character relationships and so on that I want to keep in the loop. Writing a novel feels a lot like keeping all these plates spinning in the air, and this list is my reminder to give each particular plate a little spin every now and then. And then finally, just before I launch into the first draft, a single sheet of A4 goes up with motivational crap on it. This has grown over the years, each new book seemingly inspiring a new piece of advice for myself. And seeing as how I’m revealing all my writing method secrets here, I’ll end here with what was on my wall when I wrote The Jump. Whether it will mean anything to anyone else is open to debate, but I leave you with it anyway. Enjoy! BE FEARLESS LESS IS MORE SHOW, DON’T TELL NEVER APOLOGIZE, NEVER EXPLAIN INCREASE THE CONFLICT AS EXTREME AS POSSIBLE EVERY WORD MUST JUSTIFY ITS EXISTENCE

Title: Furthermore Author: Tahereh Mafi Publisher: Penguin Teen Publication Date: August 30th, 2016 Genre: Middle Grade, Fantasy, Magic Links: Goodreads . Amazon Blurb: There are only three things that matter to twelve-year-old Alice Alexis Queensmeadow: Mother, who wouldn't miss her; magic and color, which seem to elude her; and Father, who always loved her. The day Father disappears from Ferenwood he takes nothing but a ruler with him. But it's been almost three years since then, and Alice is determined to find him. She loves her father even more than she loves adventure, and she's about to embark on one to find the other. But bringing Father home is no small matter. In order to find him she'll have to travel through the mythical, dangerous land of Furthermore, where down can be up, paper is alive, and left can be both right and very, very wrong. Her only companion is a boy named Oliver whose own magical ability is based in lies and deceit--and with a liar by her side in a land where nothing is as it seems, it will take all of Alice's wits (and every limb she's got) to find Father and return home to Ferenwood in one piece. On her quest to find Father, Alice must first find herself--and hold fast to the magic of love in the face of loss. Thoughts: OKAY, I ONLY READ THE SNEAK PEAK SO FAR. Usually,I don't review books just because of their sneak peaks, but I can't hold myself from writing one RIGHT NOW ! This will be a RIP, which after a second thought, isn't that appealing. Anyways, this is my review-in-progress. Wether I somehow end up with the full ARC, or purchase it whenever it is available in bookstore over here, I will update my Rating and Review. I didn't realize how much I missed Tahereh's writing style, until I read the 1st page of Furthermore. Pretty descriptions , rhyming phrases, and metaphors, how much have I missed thee! I fell in love with how Alice thinks. I am not 12; I am almost a decade older, and I was still impressed by the way she acts and observes what is around her. I was just like her, a few years ago. Also, the narration is NOT LIKE WHAT IS IN MOST BOOKS, because IT IS TAHEREH MAFI.....DUH ! Loved the narration! It kind of reminded me of that in the movie ( Lemony Snicket's : A Series of Unfortunate Events) The plot itself is very novel and creative, and I can't wait to dive into the adventurous journey of reading the book. Want a to read a short teaser before you pick up the book?Read This Teaser Featuring One of Mica's Nightmares & a Swoony Moment...“Keep him safe, I beg of you… She’s inches from my face. Soft, pleading, tearing eyes. Something’s familiar about them. I can’t make sense of it, though. It’s as if our souls are connected, or had been, for some time. Then, I hear my mother again… ...was my father's guide, then mine...now yours… follow her… As much as I try to do as she tells me, panic strikes me again. I fight it with a strong lunge forward, and it works. I break away, hurtling toward the ghost woman with outstretched hands. Solid iciness grips me and tugs hard. Suddenly, we’re flying above the chugging steam train, and I’m following her down the grassy landscape. When she glances over her shoulder at me, her face is clearer. Eyes, nose, mouth, for a fraction of a second. I know you. Micaela… What is it? Find it. Find what? Proof. Of what? My God, what does she want? Of us! The woman shouts, her mouth opening into a gaping black hole. I scream. Wake up! Wake up! My own voice shrieks in my ears, drowned out against the screeching of the steam engine. “Wake up!” Something holds me down. The paralysis. The woman. I can’t tell… Rock-solid hands grip my arms, too strong to be a frail, grieving wraith. Finally, I let out a shrill cry and force my eyes open. Dark, except for the white blinds over the open window tapping lightly against the sides. Bram hovers over me in bed, struggling with my flailing arms, using his knee to block my kicks. “Mica, stop! You’re dreaming.” But I keep fighting. Is he attacking me? Was he snooping in my mom’s envelope? Where is the envelope? Then I focus on Bram’s face, and reality swerves in. He’s just consoling me. “Oh my God. I can’t take this anymore. I swear, I can’t.” “That’s it. I’m calling a doctor for you.” “No!” I cry against his shirtless chest, his smooth skin warm against my face. “I don’t want doctors. They wouldn’t understand. I just want…” I don’t know what I want, but it’s definitely not a psychotherapist telling me I’m delusional. I want someone I can trust near me at all times. I need Bram here, just like this. Every night. I can’t sleep alone anymore. That way, if I do fall into the sleepless abyss again, he’ll be here to yank me free. “Want what?” His confused eyes search mine, heavy breath from the struggle of waking me still on his lips. The air between us, electric. I’m falling from all things sensible, like dreams blending with reality, except reality keeps changing with every passing day. Bram’s face is inches from mine as he tries to focus in the dark. I hear his heartbeat. About Wake the Hollow:Forget the ghosts, Mica. It’s real, live people you should fear. So are its prejudices and hatred, targeting Mica’s family as outsiders. But ghostly voices carry on the wind, whispering that her mother’s death was based on hate…not an accident at all. But soon one fake date blends into the next and before he knows it, he actually wants to kiss Mandy. For real. Too bad their plan is working, and Gus is finally noticing the one girl Caleb just might be falling for… My Review : I received an eARC of Resisting the Rebel from the publisher via NetGalley, in exchange with an honest review. First things first, I am a realist. And I here by declare Lisa Brown Roberts as the Queen of Romance and Comedy. The charisma that these characters have is amazing. I has a hard time catching my breath from swooning & laughing ! I will admit that at the beginning , I wasn't a huge fan of the writing style. I knew that Lisa can write better than that because I read other works by her. But the elements of this story made me overlook this. What this book is and how it is marketed ,is what I dream the future industry of book publishing would become. Let me explain . Mandy has ADHD, and we see through out the story how this affects her school life and day to day interactions. However, the book is not being sold, or even 100% focussed on her ADHD. Don't get me wrong, I love how now we have a lot of diversity in books. And we currently really need these books. It is important to have such books, especially during this transition phase of having diverse characters. But I can't wait for the day to come, when I open the book and discover that the character is actually disabled, has mental illness , belongs to any of LQBTQ community, is a POC, is a Muslim, Jewish, Atheist ,or even a devoted Christian . This book 100% did that. When it comes to how well ADHD is presented, I am not 100% sure, but I think it was decently represented . If you have ADHD and read this book, let me know your thoughts. I was able to connect with Maddy on so many levels! Especially when it comes to school stuff . “How can my response be wrong?” Mandy Maddy's Response to The Catcher In The Rye is exactly the same as mine to those who tell me (I didn't read TFIOS correctly !)" I absolutely loved this book, and I can't the rest of Lisa's stories ! I give it 4.5/5 stars. About the Author : Lisa Brown Roberts still hasn't recovered from the teenage trauma of nearly tweezing off both eyebrows and having to pencil them in for an entire school year. This and other angst-filled memories inspire her to write YA books about navigating life's painful and funny dramas, and falling in love along the way. Title: The Memory Game Author: Sharon Sant Publisher: Lightfoot Press Publication Date: April 8th, 2015 Genre: YA, Thriller, Paranormal, Ghosts Format:e-ARC My Rating: 4/5 stars Links: Goodreads . Amazon . Blurb: 'If there is a hell, I think maybe this is it.' Weeks after fifteen-year-old David is killed by a speeding driver, he’s still hanging around and he doesn’t know why. She hides away, alone with her secrets until, one day, the ghost of a boy killed in a hit-and-run starts to haunt her. Together, they find that the end is only the beginning… My Review: I received an e Arc copy of The Memory Game from LightFoot Press via Net Galley in exchange with an honest review. Although the plot sounds a lot of things that have I watched and read before, the author found a way to take an (over said and done tale) , and make it unique. I would have to say that voicing the main characters' emotions is an important thing to display in this story, and I wasn't disappointed ! The ending left shocked and amazed ! I never saw that coming. I would definitely be interested in reading more of her novels. I give it 4/5 stars. About the Author : Sharon Sant was born in Dorset but now lives in Stoke-on-Trent. She graduated from Staffordshire University in 2009 with a degree in English and creative writing. She currently works part time as a freelance editor and continues to write her own stories. An avid reader with eclectic tastes across many genres, when not busy trying in vain to be a domestic goddess, she can often be found lurking in local coffee shops with her head in a book. Sometimes she pretends to be clever but really loves nothing more than watching geeky TV and eating Pringles. She is the author of a string of YA novels including Runners and the Sky Song trilogy. Title: I.D. Author: Emma Rios Publisher: Image Comics Publication Date: June 28th 2016 Format:eARC Genre: Dystopia, Comic My Rating :3/5 stars Blurb:
A dystopian tale that analyzes the conflict between perception and identity through the struggle of three people who consider a 'body transplant' as a solution to their lives. My Review: I received an eARC of I.D. from Image Comics via NetGalley in exchange with an honest review. This Comic is about 3 people who are considering to have a body transplant to escape a specific aspect of their lives. The whole point of this transplant is to offer a new life to each individual, but it isn't 100% safe. We get a peak on why each person wants to undergo this surgery, and see their lives after they body transplant. The ending was a major down-fall for me because so far, this is a standalone . So much is still to be uncovered in this story. The illustration was accurate and beautiful, but a bit unclear. The drawing being in only black and orang-brown was a bit tiring to the eyes. I give it 3/5 stars. |
